The programming languages you need to know about for successful ecommerce, online marketing, and search engine optimization

Everyone knows about the excellent content management systems and blogging platforms out there. These will help those who need to quickly put together a site. One needs to factor scaling, search engine optimization, etc. But there are those of bigger size projects who need something more on a professional basis. This is to put together a large-scale site that is usually meant for large companies to build an ecommerce site, social site, or enterprise level. Here is what I think are a complete synopsis but quick overview of what programming language you would want to go with. Let me now explain these in the order as explained at Tiobe.

http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

1. Java-what else can I say. This is very complex language that makes many vets drop the language and venture into other languages. There are many frameworks that include popular Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), Hibernate, Struts, Spring, and so many more. There are so many reasons why this is popular. You have the likes of Weblogic, IBM, Oracle, Apple, Google, and many other large vendors who stand behind it. Also, this is a language which is scalable, mature, and proven to handle any traffic load. If your budget is not limited, you could always go with a great application server like Webspeheres (from IBM) or Weblogic or the free JBoss. There is always choice. These servers are rock solid for any project or site. That is why huge sites like Ebay, Amazon, and CNN are developed in Java. Also, Google’s back end services are developed in Java as well. If you ever decide to go with a mobile strategy, Google’s Android, Blackberry, and Nokia’s Symbian are all based on Java 2 Mobile Edition (J2ME) and their own software development kits. You can’t go wrong with Java. One more thing to add is that this language is compiled to the local operating system’s byte code which makes it ideal for speedy sites.2. C and C++-ahh the older languages, which brought object oriented programming to the mainstream. I am kind of excited by this language, as it is the closest language you will find to any Unix or Linux operating system, Just like Java, it is compiled to byte code to make it really fast. The main purposes of C/C++ is for those more complex backend systems used for purposes like multithreading or concurrency. You will find many local based servers written in this language. I always compare C/C++ like checkers, easy to understand but hard to master depending on the developer.3. PHP-outside of PERL, this language is great to develop raw websites with. It is also proven it can scale beautifully. Even Apache can easily include PHP flavors into any web server. It is quite advanced if you want to go there. You can also do some fancy stuff. The big disadvantages is you have to code your own navigation with rowsets from calls against databases. I am sure there are more advanced extensions to do this but PHP does show it’s age compared to newer web scripting languages.4. Visual Basic-Do I really need to talk about this one? First, it is Microsoft (MS). If you are a Microsoft shop, obviously .NET is the way to go so you should stick with the trilogy of ASP, Visual Basic, and C#. It is a very easy language to work with since it is forms based with your controls to do custom stuff. The Visual Studio is really decent to bang out .NET applications. It might be so great to develop custom or back end work so that is where C# comes in. My biggest gripe against Microsoft is the lock down, they force you to upgrade, and the costs involved for licensing. That would suck for those projects that are price sensitive. If you can, stick with open source and free languages outside of the Microsoft world.5. C# (C Sharp)-I really like this language. The syntax makes sense and yes, there are some unique ideas coming from Microsoft. This is especially true with your getting and setter properties of the language. All though it is not quite an original language, you can see the real rip off from Java and its predecessor to C or C++. Remember that Visual C++ was part of the older Visual Studio a few years ago.6. Pyhton-there is always this debate between Ruby and Python. Without Rails, Python easily wins over Ruby. Why? It is a closer scripting language that Unix based programmers prefer. From my understanding, it is mostly used for script testing or front-end development. Just ask Google or Yahoo as they use Python for their front-end home pages. That brings some clout for the language.7. Ruby on Rails-I have not seen a lot of demand for this language on the enterprise level but it is really coming around. It is so easy to put together a website using this language. Major search engines due to its URL structure love it. It is really quick to assemble a website as some consulting companies are switching to it. One needs to understand that Ruby is a separate language. As said, Python would be a better choice but once you implement with Rails the framework, could not ask for a better language. Many former developers of Java and C++ are jumping ship to this language. There are so many reasons that include the ability to quickly whip up a Struts like application. That is really appealing. The only gripe I have for RoR is it’s cryptic syntax. Unless you know RoR, you will not quickly pick up the source as with other more traditional languages.8. PERL-Do I really I need to review this language. It is a dinosaur web language. To be precise, it was the original so don’t choose this one unless you need to maintain something. There are some many better languages as explained above.

Hope that helps you out, but remember this is only my opinion. It might be a true reflection of your needs.

Online Marketing: Some of the Best Tools are Free

December 20th, 2009

Online marketing is tough. There are so many businesses competing for attention that it is difficult to stand out from the crowd. The upside is that the World Wide Web provides ample opportunity to build your business for free…if you are willing to put in the time and effort.

The primary goal for marketing online is to drive traffic to your website. More traffic equals more sales. The best way to achieve that objective is to show up at the top of the search engines. That is, when potential customers search for a product or service that you carry (your key words), your business should be on the first page, the higher up, the better. Even if your business serves only a local area, your customers need to find you easily on the web. The way this works is people enter, for example, “pest control Las Vegas” and the search engine returns websites that are optimized for those key words. The trick is to get your website to the top of that list.

There is not quick and easy way to get there. You cannot buy your way to the top of (or even into) search engines. The search engine companies like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use complicated, secret algorithms to determine which sites rank the hightest. The rules are ever-changing, mostly in an attempt to combat scammers. However, there are legitimate tools, referred to as SEO (search engine optimization), that can be worked to build your site’s status. For the most part, these tools cost no money, but do require time, effort and patience to achieve.

Most people understand SEO to be about placing the right keywords on your website pages and setting the appropriate tags for the search engine crawlers to find. While these factors are important, there is a lot more you can do by utilizing other existing websites to get the word out about yours. One of the factors that all search engines rely on are the number of links back to your site from other, well-ranked websites.

As soon as your website is posted, even if it is a “coming soon” page with a limited description, begin spreading the word. Start with the popular social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Users of these sites can create or join professional groups and post business pictures and videos. Join in with forum discussions relevant to your business. Be sure to include a link back to your website, when possible, but do not spam the boards. That is, be sure you respond appropriately to the question or discussion. If you just post your link to every forum, you will be kicked off the networking site and develop a bad reputation for your business.

Other users can join your business’s profile and be kept up-to-date on your postings. Twitter and Tumblr also allow users to keep tabs on what is happening with you and your business. These networking sites take a while to build up, but over time can be an effective tool for virtual word-of-mouth marketing.

Other websites, called social bookmarking sites, allow you to select and bookmark noteworthy web pages or news articles for others to view. These bookmarks also allow comments from other users — a great opportunity to market your own business. Of course, be sure to stick to relevant topics and offer pertinent comments. The same rules apply here as with other social sites. Some of the more popular bookmarking sites include Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit, Mixx, Fark, and StumbleUpon.

Building content on and off your site is critical. Whatever your business idea, there is a lot that your target market doesn’t know about what you do. In a bizarre twist of modern consumerism, your customers expect free information or free samples before they buy. Your site should contain enough valuable, relevant, free information to get your potential market interested in your product. For most products, tell them why they need it and how they will benefit from purchasing your product. Write articles about particular features or uses. Write product reviews of the products you sell. Start a blog that discusses relevant news articles or opinions of interest to your target. Then, post announcements of these articles to your social networking sites.

Also consider writing informational articles (not blatant advertisements) to submit to article directories, other free content websites, and even magazines and newsletters that are read by your target market. The articles should be useful to your market — the intention is to become known as an expert in your field. While for the most part you should not (and, for some cases, can not) include links or references to your business in the body of the article, you can usually include two or three links to different pages of your website in your byline. Be sure these links include the key words you are trying to optimize. For example, an article by the owner of a pet supply company might be about the health benefits of dog sports. The byline might read as follows, with the underlined words linked to pages on the website:

Mutt Trainer, owner of DogSportsStuff.com is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer. During his 28 years in the dog world he has competed in conformation, obedience, and agility with his pet Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. His first love is dog sports, especially dock diving and flyball.

If your articles are well-written, interesting, and informative, they may be picked up by other online e-zines to be distributed through their newsletters and websites. A single article, then, can result in at least two and as many as hundreds of links back to your website. Depending on how crowded your key words are on the web, these links can make a big difference in moving your site up the search engine results.

Boosting your ranking on the search engines takes significant time and effort, but the payoff is significant as well. Once your business hits the first page of the major search engines for the right key words, your business will reach a far broader market base than through any other single form of advertising. How long it takes to get there depends on how crowded your key words are and how much effort you put into SEO. Key words like “starting a business” are especially difficult to crack. It can take a year or more of concerted effort to consistently show up on the first page. Less common key words take less time but still require the links back and content to get you to the top. Be warned — those SEO consultants that guarantee your business will be in the top 5 of the search engines do not guarantee the key words you want. That is, if you are in the pizza oven business, they cannot get you to the top of “pizza oven” searches any faster than you can. However, they probably can get you to the top of “Mike’s Pizza Oven, Inc.” relatively quickly…because you are the only business out there with those key words.

Online Marketing Strategies

December 19th, 2009

Online Marketing Strategies Putting together an online marketing strategy requires knowledge of strategies that will work for your business, or the knowledge of where to find people who have the experience to lend to you for your success. The best strategies include a portfolio of techniques that draw in visitors from different sources. Researching different online advertising methods, their costs and putting together a budget to test those methods is a wonderful way to get starting with the promotion of your business. Testing products is important because it allows you to create the perfect mix to sell your products and services. There are many different types of advertising options available in the internet, such as banner ads, link building, blogs, press releases, article writing, cost-per-clicks, and many others. Deciding on the right mix of promotions requires you to have a certain feeling of chemistry with those advertising options so that you can check on them frequently and care about how they are performing. Once you decide on a group of promotions to focus on, be sure you learn as much as possible about how they work to bring in traffic and how they should be set up. You can consult an expert also to help you choose promotions that fit your needs. Be sure to do your due diligence when researching the cost of online marketing strategies. There are many companies that offer promotion options, so you will want to get at least 3 quotes for each kind of advertising option you plan to use. This will help you to budget your advertising dollars wisely while saving you money without sacrificing the quality of the service you are purchasing. The lower the cost of advertising, the more effort it will take for you to get your product or service noticed. The higher the cost of promotions, the more likely you will get page rankings or advertising spots that will bring in more customers. It is important to look at these differences and decide on the best online marketing strategy for you. Once you have chosen an advertising package for your online marketing strategies and have researched their cost to create your budget, you will want to immediately begin testing your advertising package to see which one produces the desired results you are looking for. As you allow your advertising to run, you will see customers visiting your information and converting into paying customers. Analyze the amount of paying customers that you get from your advertising, and reduce the cost or cancel the advertising that isn’t working for you. Now, you have created an online marketing strategy that produces great results.

Web Site Marketing Services – What’s the Ideal Online Marketing Mix for My Business?

December 13th, 2009

Web site marketing services are completely new services for most people – including individuals with a marketing background.

To put things in perspective, the Internet only saw widespread commercial adoption start to spread with the creation of some of the more widely used search engines in Yahoo! (1995) and Google (1998). If you were one of the early adopters of Internet technology and services, you would have about a decade of real familiarity with the Internet – and some exposure to online marketing. Most people, however, weren’t early adopters of the Internet and its related benefits applied to marketing.

Online marketing has also evolved tremendously in the last decade, migrating from simple banner advertising and online directory placement to more sophisticated web site promotion services such as search engine optimization (SEO), affiliate marketing, strategic email marketing and social media optimization/marketing (Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc).

With web site marketing services reaching new levels of sophistication – and with more web site marketing services constantly available to consumers, how do you decide on which internet business advertising methods to incorporate in your campaign? Which web lead generation methods are ultimately good for your business?

The following guidelines provide would-be online marketers with some basic rules of thumb on which web site marketing services are most suitable for their particular business:

Search Engine Marketing Consulting: Most effective with a very niche focused keyword selection approach and strategy and strong overall market demand and potential for your product or service. A sustained focus and commitment to organic SEO can often provide you with a tremendous overall return on investment over time assuming a well orchestrated strategy is implemented.

Email Marketing Consulting: Cultivating a large opt-in email marketing list and developing loyalty in your subscribers through providing them with valuable information, resources and unbiased recommendations. A large enough opt-in list can be a powerful asset for Internet marketers, which will allow your company to stay front-of-mind with your customers and prospects.

Affiliate Marketing Consulting: In the case that your product/service contains a high enough margin to allow for affiliate commissions to be taken from your final sales price – even better if your product or service can be offered on a subscription basis – you will want to experiment with affiliate marketing services. Some companies have used affiliates (commission based salespeople in the online world) to enormous success.

Social Media Marketing Services: Creating a presence within popular social media platforms such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIN and Twitter. The key is to create loyal followings within the various social media platforms, and carefully transition your loyal following into either opt-in email subscribers through a giveaway of high perceived value, or simply sell your products or services directly from social media platforms. The key will be to drive the requisite amount of traffic to your social media pages – an artform in and of itself. Social media marketing is generally less effective for business that sell to other business, as social media sites tend to be very end-consumer focused.

Pay Per Click Strategy Services: Pay per click campaigns will work best if your product or service is relatively high margin and has a high enough price point to be able to still maintain a decent profit when fees are paid. The key in pay per click services is to synch up your keyword – advertisement – landing page very closely and make your campaigns hyper targeted. If you do a good job, your Google quality score will be high, and you’ll find your rates decrease dramatically vs. competitor’s rates over time. (This is a little known fact).

A Small Overview of Online Marketing

December 4th, 2009

As more people start turning to the internet to create their own home based businesses, online marketing is becoming more important than ever. Many professionals devote themselves full time to becoming Internet marketing specialists. Web site promotion and marketing often has a much greater return on investment than more traditional forms of marketing since the overhead is so much lower. Companies can provide online marketing at a very small cost, so it is possible for them to charge a very low amount to their customers. This article reviews a few of the most popular types of online web marketing.

The banner ad was once the only real vehicle for online marketing. Banner ads are obtrusive pieces of text and graphics that are typically found at or near the top of web pages. Later versions of banner ads utilized the technology of JavaScript and other client side scripting technologies to create the monstrosities known as pop up ads. Pop up ads essentially nailed shut the coffin of the banner ad as people were so put off by the ads that they would take steps to actively block them. The banner ad has returned in a somewhat more acceptable form as online marketing experts have started creating banner ads that are less obtrusive, have less annoying flashing and animation, and mesh better with the design of the site.

One very popular form of marketing is pay per click advertising. Pay per click advertising is usually combined with a search engine to display ads on the same screen as returned search results. The ads that are displayed are those that match the topic on which the internet user was searching. The marketing consultant only pays for advertisements that generates clicks (hence, the name). This is great for several reasons. First, the online marketing consumer is never charged for ads that do not bring eyes to their website. Second, the traffic generated by pay per click promotional campaigns comes primarily for consumers who are interested in the good or service being offered since they were searching for information on the topic already.

Another prominent form of online promotion involves trying to position the website more favorably in search engine rankings. Since most people find their way around the internet using search engines, it is important to make sure that sites that are undergoing online marketing rank as highly as they possibly can. Search engine optimization is an advanced suite of techniques that tailor your site to contain the elements that search engines value most highly. As search engine algorithms constantly change, search engine optimization is a continuously evolving field.

Online marketing is a vital and growing area of modern commerce. A successful online marketing campaign can make all the difference between a successful and unsuccessful online business.
